Events set off Hall of Fame

Oklahomans make great friends.

Whether our native sons and daughters stay close to home or journey around the world, they retain a love of this land and its people.

Each year, the Oklahoma Heritage Association recognizes some of the state's best friends with induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame.

Activities leading up to the awards banquet Thursday at the Renaissance Hotel included special dinners, brunches and a cocktail reception honoring the inductees held Wednesday at the home of Julie and John Nickel.

Honorees at the reception and other events included:

Ken Fergeson of Altus, chairman of the National Bank of Commerce and patron of the arts; his wife Mary Ann.

Marlin G. "Ike" Glass Jr. of Newkirk, owner of Glass Trucking and a promoter of education and transportation throughout Oklahoma; his wife, Marybeth.

V. Burns Hargis of Stillwater, OSU president; his wife, Ann.

Polly A. Nichols of Oklahoma City, a community volunteer and philanthropist; her husband, Larry.

Lee Roy Selmon of Eufaula, All American OU and NFL football player; his wife, Claybra.

Steven W. Taylor of McAlester, vice chief justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court; his wife, Mary.

The late Wayman Tisdale, basketball and music great, was inducted into the Hall posthumously and represented by his widow, Regina.

Hall of Fame presenters attending included past honorees Clayton Bennett of Oklahoma City and his wife, Louise; John Massey of Durant; Christy Gaylord Everest of Oklahoma City; and T. Boone Pickens of Dallas, and his wife, Madeleine.

Other presenters were Robert Lynch of Washington, D.C; Greg Price of Jones; and Christopher Dale Selmon of Tampa, Fla.

Also attending were program co-chairmen Joe Cappy, his wife, Patty; and Larry Lee, his wife Marilyn; and past honorees Roxana and Bob Lorton; John Brock; Charles Stephenson, his wife, Peggy; Judge Tom Brett, and his wife, Mary; Gene Rainbolt of Oklahoma City; Frederick Drummond of Pawhuska and his wife, Janet; and Melvin Moran of Seminole and his wife, Janet.

Others included program emcees Mike Turpen, Jane Jayroe Campbell and Leona Mitchell; program committee members Vaughndean and Dr. Munson Fuller, Tracy and David Kyle, Leslie Paris and Oklahoma Heritage Association Director Shannon Nance.

Also, Andy Coats, his wife, Linda; Chancellor Glen Johnson; Steve Wolfe; Hilary and Tom Clark; Jackie and Bob Poe; Suzanne O'Brien; Peter Walter; Carol and Nevyle Cable; Nancy and Dr. Robert Ellis, Oklahoma City; Bill Anotubby, Ada; Calvin Anthony, Stillwater; Dan Gilliam, Bartlesville; William Shdeed; and Tom McDaniel, president of the Oklahoma Heritage Association, Oklahoma City.

Presenting sponsors were Tulsa World Publishing Co. and the Oklahoma Publishing Co.

Heritage Patrons included Cust-O-Fab Co., Sand Springs; Charles and Peggy Stephenson; Tulsa World; and the Oklahoman.
