Audio: Listen to Scott Ian from Anthrax talk about the band’s tour and new album.

It's a family reunion like none other,

where bonds are as strong as the Aqua Net Super Hold hairspray used to plaster their bleached bangs up from their foreheads.

It sounds like a cliche. But it's a comparison that 80s hair metal fans relish — because it's true.

Beginning Thursday, just a few miles north of Pryor, 400 acres of farmland will transform itself into one of the nation's largest parties for the Rocklahoma music festival. Headliners include everyone from Thin Lizzy to Great White, Ratt and even Anthrax.

Anthrax's Scott Ian reminisced about an early headlining tour his band did in 1984, when Christian metal act Stryper opened for them in Los Angeles. Though popular, Stryper didn't exactly meld with Anthrax fans. But it made for great memories, Ian said.

At one point, Stryper threw Bibles to fans in the audience. Ian said he laughed when fans pelted them back at Stryper while band mates performed. But the band earned his unwavering respect.

"I give them a lot of credit for taking the show because they probably had to know in their heart of hearts that maybe they weren't gonna go over.

"But you know, the Lord showed them they were on the right path and they did what they had to do. And, much to our enjoyment, it turned out pretty hilarious," Ian said, then chuckled.

"I gotta say though, I give them a lot of credit. They stood up there in front of a crowd that really only wanted to see Anthrax, and they did their show. They didn't run away or anything. Even throwing the Bibles into the crowd then seeing the Bibles get thrown back at them, it didn't stop 'em. To their credit, they stood their ground."

A lot has happened in the intervening 25 years since Anthrax debuted its first album, "Fist Full of Metal."

The band has released nine studio albums, 29 music videos, six EPs, four live albums, and been featured in popular video games like "Rock Band" and "Grand Theft Audio." It's sold more than 6 million albums in the United States alone.

The band also readies its new album, "Worship Music," (that's Anthrax, not Stryper) for October release, said Ian.

But regardless of that, Ian sounds like he's much more excited about reuniting with fans and musicians at this week's festival. Some of his heroes on the bill include undergound sensation Anvil.

"Is Anvil on? Are they on the same day as us? Please, please? I hope, I hope?! I love those guys. I'm actually in that movie. If you see it and see the credits, I'm credited as 'metal liaison,'" he said, saying he'd been to the documentary premiere at London and Sundance Film Festival.

Anvil will also open the Rocklahoma bill on Thursday night, along with co-headliners Metal Church, Leatherwolf, Overkill and Saxon.

"Oh, that rules!"
