Chart boppers: The kids are bopping to Kidz Bop

Kidz Bop is the most popular and recognized music product in the United States for children ages 5-12.

And it's no wonder. The line of music, DVDs and live entertainment features versions of some of today's most popular songs, sung by kids and for kids.

Seriously. Billboard chart scanning reveals Kidz Bop has had the most albums in the Top 200 since 2000, making it the No. 1 charting artist in this decade. More than 11 million of its CDs were sold in seven years.

One of the newest from the line to hit shelves, "Kidz Bop Greatest Hits," combines the best 13 tunes of those millions of albums sold, including versions of Smash Mouth's "All Star," Pink's "Get the Party Started," Avril Lavigne's "Sk8er Boi," Rihanna's "Umbrella," the Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started" and more. (But Fergie's "Glamorous"? Can that be sanitized, and how does the original concept of fame-seeking and money coveting translate to what the album's label calls "kid friendly" music?)

The formula is simple. Take a mega-hit, hire an adult who sounds eerily similar to the star who made the song famous, then back the track with a chorus of hand-clapping and singing kids.

It's not overwhelmingly original, but it doesn't need to be. It's fluffy and sanitized and danceable, like an energy-boosting sugar rush crammed into a little more than 45 minutes.
