Gold, man:
A reggae collection for the ages
"Reggae Gold 2009" is a cultural and musical gem, examining a genre that's known for upbeat vibes, positive messages and cultural education.
It's at times repetitive, emphasizing the second and fourth beats over and again, but what it's about. It establishes a danceable beat, and this collection is a pop- and party-friendly introduction for the uninitiated, and a good collection for those looking to update their music collections.
This CD/DVD from VP Records features 18 songs by top reggae artists, including Estelle with Sean Paul, Prodigal Son, Elephant Man, Jah Vinci, Beres Hammond, Tarrus Riler, Queen Ifrica, T.O.K. and Serani.
Reggae has a storied past in Jamaica, and the music is energetically influenced by traditional African and Caribbean music — and by American-style rhythm and blues. Reggae is also influenced by ska dance music and the somewhat slower version of 1960s Jamaican dance music called rocksteady.
For more than 16 years, the label has released a series of anticipated dancehall and reggae collections, featuring hits from international and crossover artists. And, if you purchase from iTunes, you'll get two extra tracks: "So Blessed," by Mavado and "Stay Close" by Wayne Wonder.
