Take a fiddler from the smallest county in Scotland. Pair him up with a California-born cellist who earned degrees from the Juilliard School in New York.

Together they make up one of the more potent duos in traditional Celtic music.

Actually, the partnership between fiddler Alasdair Fraser, who's been dubbed "the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling," and cellist Natalie Haas goes back to when the young cellist first attended Fraser's Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School.

Haas was just 11 at the time, and had been studying the cello for two years. But taking part in that school opened Haas up to the idea of using the cello for more than sonatas and symphonies.

It also is very much a part of Scottish tradition. The cello was a major part of Scottish music in the 18th and 19th century, with fiddle-cello duos responsible for much of the music at dances.

Fraser and Haas — whose playing as been described as "urbane as a Manhattan midnight, and as wild as a Clackmannan winter" — make their second trip to Tulsa to perform as part of the "Music @ Second and Cincinnati" series presented by the Tulsa Performing Arts Center Trust.

They will perform 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Tulsa PAC, 110 E. Second St. Tickets are $28; call 596-7111, or online at tulsaworld.com/mytix.

Earlier that afternoon, Fraser and Haas will conduct a "Scottish Strings Workshop," for those interested in honing their traditional music skills.
The workshop will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, and cost is $15 adults, $8 students.
