The chamber orchestra once dubbed "The Incredible String Band" will perform in Tulsa this weekend for the first time in two decades.

I Musici de Montreal, the 15-member ensemble led by Soviet-born cellist and conductor Yuli Turovsky, will present a concert as part of Chamber Music Tulsa's season.

There was some concern earlier this month that this concert might be canceled, after most of the orchestra were laid low with food poisoning following a 10-day tour of the People's Republic of China.

The orchestra did cancel one of its Montreal concerts that was to have featured a performance of Dvorak's Serenade for Strings in E Major, Op. 22 — a work that was also scheduled to be part of its Tulsa concert.

Because the members' collective illness prevented them from rehearsing as they would have wished, they will instead perform Tchaikovsky's "Souvenir de Florence."

The rest of the program will likely remain unchanged: Mozart's Divertimento in D major, K. 136; Elgar's Serenade for Strings in E minor, Op.20; and the Variations in B-flat major on Mozart's "La ci darem la mano," Op. 2, by Chopin, which will feature guest artist Katherine Chi on piano.

The cancellation of that Montreal concert earlier this month was a rare event for I Musici de Montreal, which in its 25-year history has become one of Canadian's greatest musical exports.

The orchestra routinely performs more than 100 concerts a year — on tour around the world, and in the course of three concert series in Montreal.

Turovsky was an award-winning cellist in his native Russia, as a soloist and as a member of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra.

He settled in Canada in 1983, founding I Music de Montreal that year.

The orchestra has released more than 40 recordings, including such acclaimed projects as its recording of Handel's Conceri Grossi, Op. 6 and the Symphony No. 14 by Shostakovich.
