To the 'Rescue': Fighting, and riding, for animal rights

They might be burly and be covered with tattoos, but on the inside, they're puppy dogs.

The biker guys from the book "Rescue Ink: How Ten Guys Saved Countless Dogs and Cats, Twelve Horses, Five Pigs, One Duck, and a Few Turtles" (Viking, $25.95) are as dedicated to animal rescue as they are to hitting the road.

And at 9 p.m. Friday, they'll have their own show debuting on the National Geographic Channel, cable channel 163, called "Rescue Ink Unleashed."

When these guys would meet at tattoo and motorcycle conventions, they realized they all had another interest in common — rescuing abandoned and abused animals.

Since forming their nonprofit animal-rescue organization based in Island Park, N.Y., in 2007, the members of Rescue Ink have been unabashed about the lengths they've traveled to rescue pets:

Here's a statement from their Web site at tulsaworld.com/rescueink :

"We will stop at nothing within the bounds of the law to protect animals at risk. We will intercede without hesitation when we are informed of a situation that needs to be addressed, and we will address it. If we need to convince people to do the right thing we can be very convincing, we'll even buy animals if that's what it takes to get them away from abusers."

The first episode, called "It's a Cruel, Cruel World," will feature the guys as they assist a veteran and his pit bulls, go on a literal wild hen chase in Queens and confront a man accused of shooting cats with a pellet gun.
