It's an untold story. The secret of how Beatlemania pierced the Iron Curtain and helped spark a revolution that contributed to the fall of communism.

It's the documentary "How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin" premiering Monday on PBS.

Filmmaker Leslie Woodhead first met the Beatles while working on a film in the Liverpool Cavern Club in England in 1962. Twenty-five years later, Woodhead started making films in the then-Soviet Union. Even though the Soviet kids were forbidden from playing the Fab Four's hit "Back in the USSR," the group still changed their lives.

In the film, Woodhead goes in search of the Soviet Beatles generation and, along the way, finds bizarre Beatles tribute bands and learns how the Cold War was won with music and nuclear missiles.

The film also uses archival footage along with interviews with fans including Sergei Ivanov, Russia's deputy premier, who insisted to the filmmaker that he learned English from smuggled Beatles records.

"In the big bad West, they've had whole huge institutions which spent millions of dollars for undermining the Soviet system," says Artemy Troitsky, in the film. He's Russia's leading rock music writer and a self-proclaimed "radical young man" during the Beatles era.

"And I'm sure that the impact of all those stupid Cold War institutions has been much, much smaller than the impact of the Beatles."

9-10 p.m. Monday, PBS, channel 11
