Circle Cinema jumps on the vampire bandwagon for its October midnight movie with "Near Dark" showing this Friday and Saturday at the theater, 12 S. Lewis Ave.

The 1987 debut directing effort from Kathryn Bigelow (whose Iraq war drama, "The Hurt Locker," is one of this year's most acclaimed films), the picture stars Adrian Pasdar (Nathan Petrelli in "Heroes"). He portrays a young cowboy from a small, dusty Oklahoma town who has been turned into a bloodsucker by a pretty gal who gives more than hickies.

The film is consistently rated one of the top vampire films (Richard Corliss of Time magazine called it no less than "the all-time teenage vampire love story," well before "Twilight" arrived on the scene). A remake has been considered.

Among other "Near Dark" trivia:

In one scene, a movie theater marquee is seen in the background, with "Aliens" listed as the movie currently showing. "Near Dark" stars Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein were all also in "Aliens," directed by James Cameron — who was later married to Bigelow for two years.

Pasdar won the lead role in auditions. Among those not selected: Johnny Depp and D.B. Sweeney.

The film was a cult find for many, as the picture was a box-office dud with earnings of $3.3 million.

"Near Dark" has a running time of 1 hour, 34 minutes and is rated R.
