Wine: 2007 Dry Creek Vineyard chenin blanc

Flavor profile: American chenin blancs tend to be overly sweet, but this one is made more in the dryer style of France's Loire Valley. Aromas and flavors of tropical fruit, peaches and a bit of citrus, impressive balance and excellent acidity make it an inviting summer wine. Serve chilled with raw oysters, Asian cuisine and light hors d'oeuvres, or serve as a refreshing before-dinner aperitif.

Cost: $12

About chenin blanc: It is the major white grape of France's Loire Valley, from appellations such as Vouvray, Montiouis, Savennieres and Coteaux de Layon. They range in style from dry to medium sweet to dessert-wine sweet. High levels of acid tend to balance the sugar in these wines. The grape is known for its hardiness, resistance to disease and ability to grow in multiple soil types.

The wines are known for their longevity, and the sweetest are among the longest-lived nonfortified wines in the world.

About Dry Creek Vineyard: It was founded in 1972 in Healdsburg, Calif., by David Stare, a MIT grad who worked for B&O Railroad several years before trips to the Loire Valley inspired him to become a winemaker. He took winemaking classes at UC-Davis to learn the trade. He was the first to use the terms "old vine zinfandel" and "meritage" on an American wine label.

Fun facts: In 2004, Dry Creek Vineyard became the only American winery to win the "Grandes Expressions de Chenin" award at the Loire Valley Wine Competition in France.

Sounds very good. I'm going to have to get a bottle or two of these. Should make great gifts as well.
