Start perfecting your salsa recipe now, because the Brookside farmers market will have its annual Salsa Contest on Aug. 12.

Sponsored by the Cherry Street Farmers' Market Association, the salsa contest takes place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the parking lot of ACE Hardware at 41st Street and Peoria Avenue.

There are four categories this year: traditional and nontraditional for both adult and child age groups.

Entering is free; anyone can purchase a tasting kit for $2 and help judge the contest. One winner in each category will get a $15 gift certificate to use at the farmers market.

Contest rules:

1. Salsa entries must be fresh and made by the participant.

2. Entries must have a label with participant's name, ingredients and heat level.

3. One quart of salsa is requested from each entry for adequate sampling and judging.

4. Salsa entries must be dropped off between 8 and 8:50 am.

5. Judging begins at 9 a.m. and will continue until 11 a.m. or when supplies run out.

6. Winners will be announced at 11:30 a.m., and winners may claim their prize at the Aug. 19 market.
