Got peppers?

They start coming in fast, before you can figure out what to do with them. The markets are loaded: jalapenos, Anaheims, poblanos.

You can roast or cook with them, but if you want the real heat, try some salsa.

Salsa contest winners were chosen for the recent Brookside Farmers Market competition.

Adult/traditional: Michelle Sullivan's Sooner Salsa

Adult/non-traditional: Ed Gatewood's Fresh Porter Peach Salsa

Children's/traditional: Jack Allen's Best Salsa

Children's/non-traditional: Connor Clary's Festive Salsa.

Winning salsas

CONNOR'S FESTIVE SALSA

Connor Clary has won every year he’s entered; that’s four victories at age 11! His grandparents, Roger and Donna Hardesty, encourage him to succeed in all of his endeavors.

5 homegrown tomatoes, coarsely chopped
1 ½ peppers (jalapeno), coarsely chopped
½ yellow bell pepper, coarsely chopped
½ red bell pepper, coarsely chopped
1 bunch of green onions, chopped
½ red onion, coarsely chopped
½ cup black beans, washed and drained
½ cup whole farmers market corn kernels (removed from the cob)
2 garlic cloves, peeled, mashed and chopped
½ bunch of fresh cilantro, snipped
½ bunch of Italian parsley, snipped
Juice of one lemon, freshly squeezed
Juice of half lime, freshly squeezed
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon secret ingredient (Wishbone Italian Dressing)
Freshly ground salt and pepper, to taste

1. Chop and combine tomatoes, peppers & onions. Peel, mash and finely chop garlic, snip cilantro and Italian parsley, add to mixture; toss lightly.

2. Add drained black beans and corn, mix gently. Squeeze lemon/lime juice over mixture.

3. Finish by adding the secret ingredient and vinegar to mixture; toss lightly and thoroughly. Salt and pepper to taste.

FRESH PORTER PEACH SALSA

Ed Gatewood’s salsa is refreshing and a departure from the traditional tomato variety.

3 ripe Porter peaches, sliced and chopped
1 red onion, chopped
? cup red bell pepper, chopped
? cup green bell pepper, chopped
? cup orange bell pepper, chopped
3 jalapeno peppers, minced
1 banana pepper, chopped
½ bunch cilantro
2 tablespoons fresh minced ginger
4 cloves of garlic, minced
5 tablespoons honey

1. Slice and chop peaches; set aside. Chop all vegetables, mince ginger and garlic then combine with peaches, toss lightly.

2. Cut cilantro and add to mixture; toss lightly. Stir in honey; serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve. Makes about one quart.
