Mafia hit
Local artists, crafters offer boutique shopping in coffee shop

Fresh Roast Coffee House, 8122 S. Harvard Ave., will host the Tulsa Craft Mafia's "Fresh Blend" boutique. Craft workshops are planned — like one on making a peppermint ornament.

Something's brewing at Fresh Roast Coffee House, and it's more than just java.

The coffee shop on south Harvard Avenue will play host to the "Fresh Blend" boutique — a showcase of the Tulsa Craft Mafia's handmade items — from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Handmade items will remain for sale there through the holidays, starting Monday.

Not only can you get your coffee fix and whittle down your shopping list, you can put a face behind this local mafia, said member Brigid Vance. The mafia, by the way, is a renowned group of local artists and crafters — a law-abiding group, too.

It will be a totally different experience from shopping at big mass-market retailers, Vance said. You'll find a great variety of items for men, women and children, "anyone you're buying for."

Everything is totally one-of-a-kind: jewelry (including guitar pick earrings and polymer clay pendants), screen-printed clothing, fun accessories and various giftables.

"A lot of love goes into making these items," more than some stuff you see in big national chains, Vance said. Plus, shopping boutiques like this is one way to support the local economy.

In addition to shopping opportunities, you can also take advantage of occasional craft demonstrations between now and Christmas. On Tuesday, for example, mafia members will offer a craft demo and workshop on making holiday greeting cards. Supplies are provided, and anyone may attend for $3, which covers materials.
