Philbrook Museum of Art, 2727 S. Rockford Road, will host acclaimed artist Joyce Scott for its monthly Third Thursday series 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Wilson Hall.
Renowned as the "Queen of Beadwork," Scott's beaded sculptural forms and neck pieces have been hailed as provocative and confrontational, addressing contentious political and social issues such as gender, race and class struggle.
In light of this summer's heated debate over renaming the Brady Arts District, this program's exploration of race, stereotypes and social issues is quite timely.
"We're all trapped in gender, race and class if you believe you have no freedom of choice and are under the weight of other people's suggestions about what you are," said Scott, a descendant of African-Americans, Native Americans and Scots.
"It's important to me to use art in a manner that incites people to look and then carry something home - even it it's subliminal - that might make a change in them," she said.
The event is included with museum admission; students age 17 and younger will be admitted free.
