OKAY – Arson is suspected in a fire that heavily damaged a century-old church early Sunday, Okay Fire Chief Terry Gorman said.
The state Fire Marshal’s Office in investigating the blaze, which destroyed the sanctuary at the United Methodist Church in Okay, a Wagoner County town about 45 miles southeast of Tulsa.
“It was part of the history of Okay,” Gorman said. “It was just an unnecessary act. It was totally uncalled for.”
The Okay Police Department has investigated reports of vandalism at the church previously, Gorman said.
The fire, the cause of which is unknown, started in the southeast corner of the sanctuary, said Robert Doke, state Fire Marshal. He had no estimate of the monetary damage.
Gorman said he has spoken to some of the church’s congregants.
“They were totally wiped out over it,” he said.
