NORMAN – Blake Bell came on in relief, but it was the OU defense that recorded the save in a 16-7 win over West Virginia in the Big 12 opener for both teams Saturday night.
Bell replaced starter Trevor Knight in the fourth quarter, threw just one pass (it was incomplete), but led the Sooners to the insurance points they needed to hang on.
Knight, making his second career start, was 10-of-20 for 119 yards and two costly second-half interceptions.
Both came inside the West Virginia 5, keeping OU from building on a 13-7 lead.

Tulsa's Carl Salazar hit two field goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner from 34 yards out with no time left, lifting the Hurricane to a 30-27 win over Colorado State on Saturday.
Salazar's kick allowed Tulsa to rally from a 27-17 deficit entering the fourth quarter. Salazar missed two field goals in last week's opening loss to Bowling Green.
Saturday's game looked destined to head to overtime before Trey Watts' 45-yard run in the final 40 seconds moved the Hurricane down to the Colorado State 20.
Watts finished with 152 yards rushing. Quarterback Cody Green was 21-of-39 for 212 yards and three touchdowns.
