The first addition to the Boeing 787 family took off Tuesday from Paine Field, near the factory where the plane was assembled, to the cheers of a couple of hundred Boeing Co. employees who watched the blue and white plane with a number 9 on the tail rise into a cloudy sky.
Some travelers will encounter the most tangible evidence of the reboot of American Airlines on Monday when the airline begins flying its first Airbus A319 jets.
Bombardier's CSeries aircraft completed its maiden flight Monday in a successful test run of the new narrow-body airplane.
Thousands of employees, suppliers and guests cheered as the CS100 plane left Mirabel airport near Montreal. It landed about 2 1/2 hours later.
Bombardier Aerospace President Guy Hachey noted that the CSeries, with 100 to 149 seats, is the world's first new narrow-body design in 26 years.
Montreal-based Bombardier, the world's third-largest maker of civilian commercial aircraft, says the CSeries is 20 percent more fuel-efficient than the comparable Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 family of aircraft.
The CSeries jet is slated to enter into service in about a year.
