A Bixby woman has been charged with child neglect after her two young children reportedly were found wandering the streets alone in May.
Kyla Marie Bentley, 26, was charged in Tulsa County District Court and was arrested Thursday.
Her two daughters, ages 3 and 5, were seen walking in the roadway in the 13400 block of South 85th East Avenue on May 31, a Bixby police report says. Police found them unharmed in the 8200 block of East 131st Street, the report says.
More than two months passed between the incident and the filing of the charge.
Tulsa County Assistant District Attorney Sarah McAmis said the delay was caused by Bentley’s conduct, including her attempts to get family members to mislead investigators.
The children told police that Bentley left them home alone “because she didn’t have anyone to watch them” when she went to work, the police report says.
The girls also said they left home to play at Bentley Park, an estimated two miles south of their home, police said.
Officers went to the house and found the front door open and no one inside, police said. Only canned food and water were in the residence, and the refrigerator was not operating, they reported.
Police contacted Bentley, who said her sister was supposed to be baby-sitting her daughters, according to the report.
