Child-neglect charges filed in pot-in-car case

Two Tulsans were charged with child neglect Friday on an allegation that they exposed a toddler to marijuana in a moving vehicle earlier this week.
Romaneka Shy’Von Hankins and Cameron Nelson Smith, both 21, were jailed just before 5 a.m. Wednesday after being arrested by Broken Arrow police.
The vehicle was traveling about 40 to 45 mph in a 65 mph zone on the Broken Arrow Expressway near Lynn Lane Road (177th East Avenue) when an officer pulled it over, according to an arrest report.
The document says the officer noticed a “large amount of smoke” coming from inside the car and saw a 22-month-old child in the back seat.
Hankins told the officer she had smoked marijuana earlier and had consumed “a few drinks” before driving, according to the report.
Smith, the passenger, asked the officer what was taking so long, and the officer replied that he was waiting for backup before searching the vehicle for drugs, the report says.
Smith then said, “Well, it is right here,” and opened the glove box to reveal a partially burned marijuana cigarette, the report says.
Hankins and Smith were also charged Friday in Tulsa County District Court with the misdemeanor charge of unlawful possession of a controlled drug, specifically marijuana.
Hankins was also charged with the misdemeanor crimes of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to carry a security verification form, unsafe lane use and driving with a suspended license.
Both Smith and Hankins were still in Tulsa Jail on Friday night.
