Emergency flights began arriving in Acapulco on Tuesday to evacuate some of the thousands of tourists stranded by flooding and landslides that shut down the highway to Mexico City and swamped the international airport.
A federal judge on Tuesday ordered a new trial for five former New Orleans police officers convicted of civil rights violations stemming from deadly shootings on a bridge after Hurricane Katrina, concluding the case had been tainted by "grotesque prosecutorial misconduct."
Afghanistan: As of Tuesday, at least 2,135 members of the U.S. military had died as a result of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, according to an Associated Press count. The latest death reported by the military:
- Indiana Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Randall R. Lane, 43, of Indianapolis, died Friday in Kabul, Afghanistan, from a noncombat-related illness. He was assigned to the 190th Transportation Battalion, 38th Sustainment Brigade, Franklin, Ind.
Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 19,287 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department.
