Peter Markes always knew he wanted to teach. But it wasn't until he started making money playing the guitar in high school that Oklahoma's 2014 Teacher of the Year figured out he could combine the two.
If Luis Delarosa didn't know that he was missed at Thoreau Demonstration Academy before, his classmates literally spelled it out for him Tuesday.
OKLAHOMA CITY — A music teacher from Edmond North High School has been named the 2014 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year.
Peter Markes was named teacher of the year by state school Superintendent Janet Barresi during a ceremony Tuesday at the Oklahoma State Fair.
Markes is an 8th-grade through 12th-grade string orchestra and Advanced Placement music theory teacher. He has 12 years teaching experience — the last 11 at Edmond North.
Markes will represent Oklahoma in the national Teacher of the Year competition in the spring of 2014.
