Peter Markes was named teacher of the year by state school Superintendent Janet Barresi during a ceremony Tuesday at the Oklahoma State Fair.

Markes is an 8th-grade through 12th-grade string orchestra and Advanced Placement music theory teacher. He has 12 years teaching experience — the last 11 at Edmond North.

Markes will represent Oklahoma in the national Teacher of the Year competition in the spring of 2014.
