SAND SPRINGS — A Sand Springs man was killed when he was struck by a vehicle on the Arkansas River bridge Wednesday evening.

John Maurice Perry, 86, was driving north across the bridge on Oklahoma 97 when the hood of his Mitsubishi Galant flew up, obstructing his view, police said. Perry stopped and got out of the car to close the hood, and a sport utility vehicle behind him also stopped, Capt. John Mars said.

While Perry was outside his car, a small trash truck struck the SUV, causing it to hit Perry, Mars said. A medical helicopter was dispatched, but Perry was pronounced dead before the helicopter was able to take him to a hospital.

A pregnant woman in the SUV was examined as a precaution but reportedly was not injured.
