Softball Athlete of the Week: Tori Danielson

Senior catcher hit .600 (6-for-10), with two home runs - including a grand slam - and eight RBIs to help lead the Maidens to three consecutive conference wins.

Softball Athlete of the Week: Brandi Gay

Batted .611 with five runs scored, seven RBIs and seven stolen bases in five games, in addition to making several difficult catches in the outfield.

Multiple Tulsa-area teams traveled to out-of-state tournaments during Labor Day Weekend.

Owasso went to St. Louis and after winning all four of their games against Missouri-based teams by a combined 41-8 margin, including a 13-3 win over Affton in the final, took home the Cor Jesu tournament championship.

Owasso then squeaked out victories over Claremore Sequoyah, 11-10 last Thursday, and over District 6A-4 leader Westmoore, 3-2 on Monday. Owasso (15-4, 4-1) is in third in District 6A-4 and has won seven straight games.

"We've actually played pretty well the last week and a half or so," Owasso coach Shane Eicher said.

Broken Arrow went 5-1 and Skiatook went 3-2 at the Tournament of Champions in Erie, Colo., which crowns no champion.

Junior catcher Alexa Romero hit four home runs for Broken Arrow in Colorado and is batting .493 with 40 RBIs. Junior center fielder Hannah Hendrix is hitting .467.

"A lot of the girls play on different teams during the summer, so it was good to go out there and get the chance to spend a lot of time together that we don't normally get to do," Broken Arrow coach Randall King said of the team-building endeavor. "It's a strong tournament and it's always competitive, so it's good to go out there and do well."

The Tigers also hammered District 6A-4 foe Enid 10-0 last Thursday. At 18-4 overall and 5-1 in the district, Broken Arrow is in second place.

Tahlequah Sequoyah, the state's No. 1-ranked team in 3A with a 22-1 record, was 5-1 at the Erie tournament. The Indians outscored their Colorado opponents, 55-21, but also suffered their first loss, falling 5-4 to Wheat Ridge on Aug. 31.

Since returning home, Sequoyah has won three straight games - by a 46-3 margin.

Barnsdall's Gay enjoying strong season: Barnsdall outfielder Brandi Gay capped off a stellar week with a 3-for-3 performance and three runs in her team's 6-3 victory over Pawhuska on Saturday at the Dewey Tournament.

In five games last week, in which her Panthers' squad went 4-1, Gay batted .611 (11-for-18), scored five runs and had seven RBIs. She was 7-for-7 on steals and made some unlikely catches in the outfield.

"She's a small girl, but real fast - one of the faster girls I've had here and we've had several girls go on to play college," said Barnsdall coach Joe Gilbert, who is in his 59th school year at the school. "She can get to the ball so quick in the outfield ... Her biggest asset is baserunning. She's my lead-off girl and she's tough to get out."

Gay hopes to play in college.

"She's a real hard worker," Gilbert said. "You couldn't ask for anything more from her."

With a 12-5 record, Barnsdall is hoping to crack the state's Class A top 15 rankings. The Panthers did manage to avenge their only loss of last week, a 10-2 setback to Dewey last Thursday, by rebounding to win the rematch with Dewey on Monday, 5-4.
