Who knows what's best?

Most times I know what's good enough for me.

So here's that list.

There are obviously better offerings to be found in each category. But this group works beautifully.

Root beer: Sprecher's. This Wisconsin company makes root beer and beer, which makes sense. The root beer is made with honey and is great. Be careful in public, because the root beer bottle looks exactly like a beer bottle.

Grilled salmon: McNellie's. Perfectly cooked every time.

Pork chops and soups: Lucky's on 15th. Name of the place makes you feel good. Food makes you feel better.

Low-cal dessert: Edy's Outshine Fruit Bars. Makes every calorie count.

Insane-cal ice cream: Magnum double chocolate. Probably served in heaven.

TV: "Nikita" and "The Good Wife" are about all that's decent. "Nikita" is a female James Bond. Only six shows remain. "The Good Wife" is about her good husband, as much as anything.

Pen: The Uni-Ball 207 Impact bold. A gel pen that writes in exclamation points.

Eco-friendly notebook: The banana paper notebook, with pocket. Got mine at Target.

Most perfect notebook ever: Rhodia, from France. Writing on one is like authoring a proclamation.

Polo shirt: Psycho Bunny, from Robert Godley, obviously a Brit.

Scent: I Hate Cologne, from Christopher Brosius in Brooklyn. Great natural scents, might make friends think you've just come from rolling around in the grass.

Mexican food: Las Americas, on Third Street, authentic, inexpensive.

Vacuums: The Dirt Devils are the surprise picks of the litter. Most hold their own with the high-dollar Dyson models.

Coffee maker: The Nespresso Citiz makes perfect lattes. Pricey, but puts coffee at home back on the map.

K-packs for Keurig one cup machines: Eight O'Clock Italian, and Jet Fuel, are about the only brands strong enough.

Barbecue: Billy Ray's on the west side, great hot sauce.

Fish: White River Fish Market on the north side, great atmosphere.

Old fashioned juicy cheeseburger: Wild Fork in the middle, at Utica Square.

Dog treats: Greenies. Big ones run about two bucks per treat. And last about two seconds. They have chlorophyll in them, which helps to explain a dog's desire to eat the whole package at once.

Coffee cup: Open a cupboard. Thirty souvenir coffee cups you never use, right? The M.A. Hadley company makes the perfect cup, and other pottery, from Louisville, happy illustrations of animals and all the best memories, in recognizable blue.
