The jury selection process began Monday for the Tulsa County trial of a man who faces a possible death penalty in a two-year-old double homicide case.
Zane Atchison, 26, of Broken Arrow, is being tried on two counts of first-degree murder, linked to the Aug. 30, 2011, deadly shootings of Patrick Shawn, 27, and Kaylyn Kosofsky, 24, outside Open Bible Fellowship, 1439 E. 71stSt.
Shawn was found dead on the church parking lot pavement near the QuikTrip convenience store at 1415 E. 71st St.
In another area of the church parking lot, Kosofsky’s body was found in the passenger seat of a car, according to police.
Some 98 prospective jurors in the case were called for a selection process that began with jurors completing questionnaires that lawyers will be able to review before the actual questioning process starts.
Atchison is standing trial alone. A co-defendant, Joel Rosales Pina, 29, is scheduled to be tried separately later.
A count of conspiracy to commit murder, filed only against Pina, alleges that Pina conspired with Atchison to murder Shawn and offered money to Atchison in exchange for Atchison’s killing Shawn.
A Tulsa police affidavit says that a witness told police that Shawn owed Pina approximately $45,000 “in relation to drug dealings.”
If convicted of first-degree murder, the punishment options for Atchison are life, life without parole, and death.
