Letter to the Editor: Survivor

As an 84-year-old, 44-year survivor of metastatic breast cancer, I looked forward to the Cancer Survivor supplement, which was advertised in the past weeks.

Philip Creider criticized Planned Parenthood's breast cancer prevention program as hypocritical because he claims the organization also performs abortions ("Elaboration," Sept. 6).

Syndicated columnist Dana Milbank ("Falling short of 1963," Aug. 30) writes: "The first African-American president ... is a fulfillment of King's dream."

President Obama said: "Because they kept marching, America changed ... and, yes, eventually the White House changed." The writer's opinion begs the question: Was it Dr. King's dream that one day a man of his own racial heritage would occupy the White House, regardless of what that man stands for? To put it another way, will Obama be a successful president simply because of the color of his skin?

Think about it: A citizen who votes for someone because of the color of his skin is as prejudiced as the citizen who votes against that person because of the color of his skin.

Is President Obama promoting the long-term welfare of his minority race simply by sharing the color of their skin? The Scriptures describe God as not one bit influenced by externals. Lately, we heard much about judging others based on "the content of their character." What the speakers leave unsaid is how important it is for cultural leaders not only to preach character but also to display sterling character with a clear conscience.

Every parent knows the folly of telling Johnny and Suzy, "Do as I say, not as I do." Huh? Most little urchins would rather do as the parent does, choosing easy vice over hard-won virtue.
