In his letter, ("No One Listened," Aug. 31) Robert Leppelmeir made some inaccurate claims, inaccurate conclusions and key omissions. His intent was to exonerate George W. Bush for his war against Iraq.
Re: Baby Veronica story: Isn't it just a little odd that the same attorneys in Oklahoma City and South Carolina and the adoption agency are the same parties in the Desaray case in Oklahoma City and are now representing the Capobiancos.
Philip Creider criticized Planned Parenthood's breast cancer prevention program as hypocritical because he claims the organization also performs abortions ("Elaboration," Sept. 6).
He purports to know in detail all about Planned Parenthood's breast exam protocol, yet he seems oblivious that Planned Parenthood doesn't provide abortions at all in Oklahoma.
He claims there is a link between abortion and breast cancer, his authority being a questionable study published in the Indian Journal of Community Medicine. He neglected to clarify, however, that this study was not conducted in the Native American population of the U.S., but in India, and included only 188 women. If he had actually read the study, he would know abortion was not mentioned as a risk factor at all in the study results, and even the authors questioned the study's usefulness.
All leading U.S. cancer organizations reject the claim that abortion causes breast cancer. The American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Susan G. Komen Foundation and the CDC all have published statements that there is no connection.
No connection was found in any of the following studies, considered definitive by international cancer experts: a Denmark study of 1.5 million women; Harvard University study of 100,000 women, and a California Teachers Study of 100,000 women.
What extensive medical research background does Creider have that makes him such an authority on breast cancer and abortion? He is the assets manager for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tulsa.
