Shaken Nationals get back to work

The vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff greeted players in the Washington Nationals clubhouse before the game, handing out blue and gold Navy caps. Manager Davey Johnson and his players held those caps from Adm. James Winnefeld over their hearts during a pregame moment of silence, disturbed only by the sound of a helicopter hovering nearby.

Padres promote Trevor Hoffman to coordinator role: The San Diego Padres have promoted Trevor Hoffman to upper level pitching coordinator and special assistant to general manager Josh Byrnes.

Hoffman, the former star closer, will evaluate and help coordinate all pitchers at Double-A, Triple-A and the big league team.

Byrnes says Hoffman "will be a key part of finishing the development of our younger pitchers."

Byrnes cited Hoffman's expertise, passion and communication skills as being critical for helping young players.

Hoffman's 601 career saves, in 677 chances, are the second-most in major league history.

Dodgers raise ticket prices for 2014 season: It's going to cost more to attend Los Angeles Dodgers games in 2014.

The team said that ticket prices are increasing in many sections of Dodger Stadium for the first time in two years.

Team president and CEO Stan Kasten says the new ownership first wanted to prove to fans that it was committed to putting the best possible team on the field, provide a good fan experience at the stadium, and reach out in the community before it raised prices.

Last month, the team surpassed 3 million in attendance, the first major league club to do so this season.

The biggest increase is for front row seats between the bases, which will go up by $30 a game. Rows two through eight will increase by $20.

The team says that the price for more than 45,000 seats will increase by $3 or less, and that 58 percent of the 56,000 seats at Dodger Stadium will have season tickets available for $20 or less. Some field level seats are available for less than $20 per ticket, less than in 2006.
