It took only one pitch Tuesday night for the Texas Rangers to take the lead in a game for the first time in more than a week.
The vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff greeted players in the Washington Nationals clubhouse before the game, handing out blue and gold Navy caps.
The Washington Nationals postponed Monday night's game against the Atlanta Braves following shootings at the nearby Navy Yard.
The game was rescheduled as part of a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday.
"It's a very emotional day. An extremely horrific act happened very near to the ballpark," Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims over there and all the people affected by this. We felt it was inappropriate to play a major league baseball game with such tragedy right down the street."
Dodgers activate Matt Kemp from DL: The Los Angeles Dodgers have activated Midwest City graduate Matt Kemp from the disabled list for the third time this season.
Kemp isn't in the lineup for the Dodgers' game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night.
The 2011 NL MVP runner-up first went on the disabled list on May 30 with a mild right hamstring strain. He was activated on June 25 but lasted only 12 days before heading back to the DL with inflammation in his left shoulder.
In 62 games, Kemp is hitting .263 with five home runs and 27 RBIs.
Royals' Ventura to make start in place of Duffy: Top pitching prospect Yordano Ventura will make his major league debut for the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night when he takes Danny Duffy's place in the rotation against Cleveland.
Duffy has been experiencing some inflammation in his surgically repaired left elbow, and the Royals decided to give Ventura the start in a critical series with playoff implications.
The Royals were 3 1/2 games behind Texas in the AL wild-card standings entering Monday night's series opener against the Indians. Cleveland began the day a half-game back.
Ventura was 5-4 with a 3.74 ERA this season at Triple-A Omaha, helping the Storm Chasers win the Pacific Coast League championship. The hard-throwing right-hander also has pitched in the past two Futures Games during All-Star weekend.
