A man was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting his stepfather in Sapulpa.

Scott Christopher Edwards, 31, pleaded no contest to first-degree manslaughter in the killing of Ricky Dean McClain.

The charge was reduced from first-degree murder as part of a plea agreement accepted by Tulsa County District Judge Kurt Glassco.

Investigators said Edwards shot McClain, 54, at their residence in the 4500 block of West 55th Street on April 15, 2012.

Michelle McClain - the slain man’s wife and the mother of Edwards - was charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.

That charge was dismissed against her in September after a special judge determined at a preliminary hearing that there was insufficient evidence.

Michelle McClain, 53 - who the charge indicates is also known as Michelle Edwards - was accused of “staging the crime scene to look like the victim had a handgun at the time of his death” and by providing “conflicting information” to law enforcement officers regarding the death, a court document says.

The fatal shooting occurred at a Sapulpa residence in Tulsa County.

Edwards and Michelle McClain told police that Ricky McClain pushed his wife, prompting the altercation. After Edwards shot Ricky McClain, Edwards shot himself in the arm in an attempt to make the scene look like self-defense, Sapulpa police reported.

The 30-year sentence requires Edwards to serve 85 percent - 25 and one-half years - of his prison term before being eligible for parole or release. He gets credit on his sentence for 13 months in jail.
