OSSAA critics testify before legislative panel

A legislative panel put the spotlight on critics of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association on Tuesday.

Highlights of Deadspin Q&A with SI editors

Deadspin.com hosted a chat with Sports Illustrated managing editor Chris Stone and executive editor Jon Wertheim on Tuesday regarding the investigative report on Oklahoma State football and the response.

Ex-OSU lineman Williams returns to practice for Vikings: Defensive tackle Kevin Williams has returned to practice for the Minnesota Vikings after missing the season opener with an injured right knee.

The former Oklahoma State star was back on the field Wednesday as the Vikings began preparations for the game Sunday at Chicago. Williams suffered a bone bruise and hyperextension of his right knee in the third preseason game at San Francisco.

The six-time Pro Bowler said last week that he would be shocked if he wasn't ready to play against the Bears.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said Williams will be evaluated throughout the week before a decision is made for Sunday.

The Vikings sorely missed Williams in the opener. The Lions were able to gouge their run defense with Reggie Bush and Joique Bell in a 34-24 victory over the Vikings.

Cowboys' Spencer returns to practice, should play: Dallas Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer has practiced for the first time this season and says he should play Sunday against Kansas City.

Spencer was a limited participant Wednesday when the Cowboys practiced in their $1.2 billion stadium to avoid another day in the Texas heat.

The 29-year-old Spencer missed all of training camp and the preseason after aggravating a left knee injury from the offseason in the pre-camp conditioning test. He had surgery July 25.

Chiefs' Charles expected to play vs. Cowboys: Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles expects to be available for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys after bruising his quad in last weekend's win at Jacksonville.

Charles ran for 77 yards and a touchdown before hurting his quad in the second half of a 28-2 rout of the Jaguars. He went to the locker room, then returned to the field for one play, before coach Andy Reid decided to give him the rest of the afternoon off.

"We're just taking it slow," Reid said before Wednesday afternoon's practice. "I think he'll be OK for the game. Just see how it all works out."

Charles participated in a morning walkthrough and was in pads for the afternoon workout, but he was limited during the individual portion of practice. He did some agility drills with the rest of the running backs but did not take part in team activities.

He was listed as "did not participate" on the official injury report.

Suh appeals $100,000 fine from NFL: Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh says he isn't going to change what he does on the field.

And he's appealing his latest fine, too.

Suh was fined $100,000 for an illegal block on a Minnesota Vikings player in the Detroit Lions' season-opening win last weekend. It is the NFL's biggest monetary fine for on-field conduct, not including the dollars lost by players due to suspensions.

"It's going through the appeals process," Suh said Wednesday.

Suh's agent, Roosevelt Barnes, said he expects the appeal to be heard later this week, when he hopes to provide another perspective to reduce his client's fine.

"Everyone is talking about how Ndamukong shouldn't have blocked the 300-pound lineman because there was no way he was going to catch a linebacker," Barnes said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "If that's the case, the lineman should've known he wasn't going to catch the linebacker. But the lineman did attempt to catch the linebacker and Ndamukong attempted to block him. But everyone wants to make Ndamukong out to be a villain."

Suh vowed that he's not going to change his ways on the field, including when Detroit (1-0) goes on the road to play the Arizona Cardinals (0-1) on Sunday.

"I'm going to continue to play hard, blue-collar football," he said.
