An Okfuskee County sheriff’s deputy died in a crash Wednesday afternoon while attempting to assist an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper.
David Allford, 37, of Wetumka was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Interstate 40 about a mile west of the Okemah exit. The crash happened about 4:20 p.m., according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.
Allford was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe west on I-40 while he was responding to help a state trooper who had “a combative subject,” according to the report.
OHP Capt. George Brown said the trooper had called for assistance as he was trying to arrest a possibly drunken driver.
The front left tire on the deputy’s sport utility vehicle had a blowout, and the SUV ran into the median and struck a cable barrier, the OHP report says. The vehicle overturned approximately two times and came to a rest upright on the shoulder of the eastbound side of the highway, according to the OHP report.
Allford was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected, the report says.
