Family & Children's Services' 20th annual competition is designed to spark kids' creativity, celebrate families and show community spirit. The event, the theme of which is "Family Fun Outdoors," coincides with author Khaled Hosseini's opening of Tulsa Town Hall's 79th season Oct. 4. Inspired by Hosseini's debut novel, "The Kite Runner," the competition includes a 3-D kite category, as well as the traditional poster contest. Winning students receive cash prizes, as do teachers of the top artists. Hosseini will make a special appearance at a recognition ceremony for winners on Oct. 3.
Categories range from kindergarten through 12th grade. All entries are due by 5 p.m. Sept. 16, at F&CS, 650 S. Peoria Ave.

Brady Heights Historic Home Tour
Bay windows, carriage houses and broad porches are among the details visitors will spy on this tour of Brady Heights, a showcase of home styles ranging from Folk Victorian to Colonial Revival. The tour will feature 10 homes and three churches, including the famed Brady Mansion. It starts at Centenary United Methodist Church, 631 N. Denver Ave., where tourists (yes, that means you, too) can buy tickets and find a map plus house descriptions.
Proceeds benefit cultural and social projects of the Brady Heights Neighborhood Association.

Cigars for Troops kickoff
This fifth annual event shows support for American military stationed overseas by collecting cigars for them starting at the kickoff. Special guests will include K.C. and Sean "Casper" Johnson of L'Atelier Cigars, who will reveal new products and offer great deals. Other highlights include live music by Crosstown Groove, raffle prizes and free food.

Splash Dash
Miller Swim School will hold this event, in which swimmers will have a three-hour period to swim a maximum of 100 lengths. Donors are encouraged to support the athletes by pledging either a flat donation or specific amount of money per length that the swimmer completes.
Proceeds will benefit athletes involved with the Special Olympics Oklahoma program, including more than 2,500 in the Tulsa area.
