Come December, Shannon West will be a college graduate.

Two-time Newbery Honor Book-winning author Jim Murphy came to Tulsa recently to accept the Tulsa Library Trust's 2013 Anne V. Zarrow Award for Young Readers' Literature.

The award presentation, held at Connor's Cove in Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St., was the culminating event for Tulsa City-County Library's summer reading program.

Murphy presented awards to the winners of the library's 2013 Young People's Creative Writing Contest.

Here are the categories and winners for each:

Poetry

Ages 10-12: first place, Chloe Buckner; second place, Belle Bieligk; third place, Will Martucci

Tulsa Area United Way Craft Show

This inaugural event, hosted by the Tulsa County Parks Department and Board of County Commissioners Office, will offer a slew of items from myriad vendors. Items include silver and Native American jewelry, paintings, seasonal wood crafts, crocheted baby items, needlepoint ornaments and bookmarks, hair bows, tutus and wickless candles by Scentsy. You'll also find Mary Kay Cosmetics, Nerium, storage containers and cooking utensils from Pampered Chef and Tupperware, interchangeable handbags, baskets, ceramics, embellished flip-flops, health-care products and - my favorite - baked goods, including gourmet cupcakes.

Proceeds from the rental of booth spaces will be donated to the Tulsa Area United Way.

Event details: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, Chandler Park Community Center, 6500 W. 21st St.

Attire: casual

Aim High Academy’s grand opening

Aim High Academy, a nonprofit organization teaching gymnastics with a twist of faith to more than 200 children from north Tulsa, will host this event celebrating its new 21,000-square-foot facility. In addition to kicking off its gymnastics classes for the school year, Aim High will have snow cones and popcorn for kids. Plus, three north Tulsa gymnasts - Kaylyn Borens of Central Middle School, Kiona Walker of Monroe Middle School and Sheridan Ramsey of Carver Middle School - will be honored, as they qualified for the 2013 Oklahoma All-State Gymnastics Team.

Angelo Prassa Golf Tournament

This scramble-format tournament, formerly held at LaFortune Park, begins with a lunch buffet. During the event, players will have a chance to hit a hole-in-one at one of four par-three holes and win a car from Don Thornton Automotive Group.

Proceeds will go toward gymnasium and locker room improvements, plus tuition assistance.

Event details: Monday, Sept. 23 - 11 a.m. lunch, 1 p.m. shotgun start - Cedar Ridge Country Club, 10302 S. Garnett Road, Broken Arrow

Attire: Men are required to wear collared golf shirts and golf slacks or appropriate length shorts. Shirts are to be tucked in at all times.
