Any evening that starts with a red carpet and Spartan soldiers forming a sword-drawn canopy over your head deserves writing about.

Courage to carry on

Come December, Shannon West will be a college graduate.

Television icon Regis Philbin will be the keynote speaker for the 10th annual Champions of Health gala Oct. 8 at the Cox Business Center, 100 Civic Center.

A Guinness World Record-holder for most hours on camera, Philbin may be best known for co-hosting "Live with Regis and Kelly" until he stepped down from the show in 2011.

In addition to his daytime success, he was also popular on nighttime television, with "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and "Super Millionaire," and he was the original host of "America's Got Talent." He received a TV Guide award as Personality of the Year in 2001 and a Broadcasting and Cable Lifetime Achievement Award.

Philbin, who has authored several best-selling books, was the 2006 inductee into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and also that year was selected by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for induction into the Television Academy's Hall of Fame.

The Champions of Health awards program and gala will honor Champions of Health winners for making a difference and improving the health of Oklahomans. The gala is a fundraiser for the Oklahoma Caring Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing children access to preventive health services. Those include the Oklahoma Caring Vans, which provide basic childhood immunizations, at no charge, to Oklahoma children ages 6 weeks to 18.

The awards program is presented by the Oklahoma Dental Association, the Oklahoma Hospital Association, the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality, the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, the Oklahoma State Department of Health, the Oklahoma State Medical Association and the Office of the Governor-Native American Liaison, in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma.

This year's gala will be chaired by Gary and Sandra Trennepohl. The dinner committee includes Howard and Billie Barnett, Jim and Kristin Bender, Martha Burger, Dr. Gerry and Paula Clancy, Becky and Jack Frank, Dr. Dianne and Lou Gasbarra, Bryan and Andrea Gonterman, Jacque and Michael Hensley, Michael and Libby Johnson, Laura Kenny, Jackie Kouri and Gary Paxton, David and Tracy Kyle, and Mary and Eric Mélon.

Also, Dr. Marc and Mary Milsten, Leslie Paris, Dr. John and Jane Phillips, Dr. Gary Raskob, Dr. Jim and Donna Riemer, Jill and Robert Thomas, Susan and William Thomas, Don and Sheroll Walker, and Dr. George and Dr. Thelma Young.

Gala tickets are $100, and sponsorships are available now by calling 855-628-8642.
