Stepping into Antique Restorations conjures up a time when consumer goods were made to last.
It was my first time to experience a rodeo, in person.
As a news photographer, I am accustomed to disappointment. I have been to a lot of assignments that don't turn out like I hope. A lot of candlelight vigils with no candles. I cannot count the times that I have walked into an assignment where the subject says, "You should have been here five minutes ago. ..." It can lead to a bit of cynicism. So when I got a tip about a croquet match at LaFortune Park, I was skeptical.
Of course, I hoped for players dressed in crisp white on a well-manicured green field. I had visions of the brightly colored balls on the green grass. I thought that would be too good to be true. But when I arrived at the 2013 Indian Territory Open, it lived up to all my hopes. The event is hosted by The Tulsa Croquet Club. They play at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays during daylight savings time. A player mentioned it would be nice to have media attention at the beginning of their season instead of the end. I assured him that with the picturesque setting, I will be there earlier in the season next year.
