A man who police said shot himself to stage a scene was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting his stepfather in Sapulpa.
Scott Christopher Edwards, 31, pleaded no contest to first-degree manslaughter in the killing of Ricky Dean McClain, 54.
The charge was reduced from first-degree murder as part of a plea agreement approved by Tulsa County District Judge Kurt Glassco.
Edwards shot McClain at their residence in the 4500 block of West 55th Street on April 15, 2012, police reported.
Michelle McClain - who was the slain man's wife and is the mother of Edwards - was charged with being an accessory to murder after the fact. That charge was dismissed in September after a special judge determined that prosecutors had insufficient evidence to support it.
Michelle McClain, 53 - whom the charge indicates is also known as Michelle Edwards - was accused of "staging the crime scene to look like the victim had a handgun at the time of his death" and by providing conflicting information to law enforcement officers regarding the death, a court document says.
The shooting occurred at a Sapulpa residence in Tulsa County.
Edwards and his mother told police that Ricky McClain had pushed his wife, prompting the altercation.
They told officers that Ricky McClain attacked them with a firearm and was shot in self-defense by Edwards, who had a gunshot wound to his arm, an arrest report says.
After Edwards shot Ricky McClain, he shot himself in an effort to make the killing look like self-defense, Sapulpa police reported.
The 30-year sentence requires Edwards to serve at least 85 percent - or 25 1/2 years - of his prison term before becoming eligible for parole. He gets credit on his sentence for more than a year spent in jail.
