SemGroup Corp. CEO Norm Szydlowski, who saw the challenges in international energy issues up close years ago, is looking forward to his visit with a Pakistani delegation on Friday.
Szydlowski and Tulsa-based SemGroup will host the meeting with the travelers, who are taking part in the State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program. The group is studying U.S. energy policies as it looks for ways to improve Pakistan's infrastructure.
"Pakistan has seen its share of energy turmoil," Szydlowski said in a statement. "The country is wracked by regular power outages impacting entire cities or more. It also suffers from shortages of commodities like natural gas, a booming area here in the U.S."
The nation in southern Asia is ahead on adapting compressed natural gas, with millions of CNG vehicles on the road. An energy crisis, however, caused the Pakistani government to ban CNG for private vehicles with engines bigger than 1,000 cubic centimeters, according to reports.
The visiting group includes high-ranking representatives from Pakistani government ministries and state-run energy companies.
Nearly 10 years ago Szydlowski was recruited by the Pentagon to serve as a senior consultant and help rebuild the Iraqi oil sector following the early stages of the war. He led an advisory team focused on rehabilitation, infrastructure security and future strategy for the Iraqi Ministry of Oil in Baghdad.
Szydlowski was named to head SemGroup as it came out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2009. The company recently reported $43.4 million in net income for the first quarter and announced its first-ever dividend to shareholders.
The Tulsa Global Alliance is the local host for the Pakistani group.
SemGroup and its spinoff partnership, Rose Rock Midstream LP, own and operate crude oil, natural gas and asphalt storage, transport and processing assets throughout North America.
