Former Australian leader condemns US gun culture

A former Australian government leader has blamed the gun culture in the United States for the shooting death of an Australian baseball player in Oklahoma and condemned America's lax firearm controls as a corruptive influence around the world.

WASHINGTON - Two lawmakers from Oklahoma introduced a bill Friday that would put new limits on ammunition purchases by most federal departments.

Republicans Sen. Jim Inhofe and Rep. Frank Lucas said they aim to prevent the federal government from stockpiling ammunition.

Their bill would prohibit federal departments other than the Department of Defense from buying more ammunition if their supplies exceed the monthly averages before President Barack Obama took office in 2009.

The legislation also would require a report from the Government Accountability Office on how government purchases of ammunition affect the supply available to the public.
