Eighty World War II veterans boarded the state's 14th Honor Flight bound for Washington, D.C., on Wednesday morning.

The veterans, 37 of whom are from Tulsa, will visit the national World War II Memorial and will see the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery.

"It's a thank you they've never gotten," said state Rep. Eric Proctor.

A sendoff ceremony was held at the SpiritBank Event Center on Tuesday night. Several local organizations, including Bixby High School's JROTC, the American Airlines Veterans & Military Employee Resource Group and the Patriot Guard Riders as well as friends and family, took part in the event.

On Wednesday morning the veterans applauded upon receiving water cannon salutes by airport fire departments in Tulsa and Baltimore. Local Honor Flight volunteers in Maryland and the Air Force band greeted the men and women.

The veterans are scheduled to return to Tulsa on a flight arriving at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
