What They're Saying

Here is a sample of Wednesday’s
reaction from Sports
Illustrated’s investigation into the
Oklahoma State football program:
“I agreed to talk with (reporter)
Thayer Evans with the
presumption that we would
be talking about something
completely different. I became
uncomfortable with where the
conversation was going and
later retracted all statements.
I very clearly let him know I
did not want to be a part of
his story and that he did not
have my permission to use any
part of our conversation or my
name.”
— Former OSU running back Seymore
Shaw in a statement about
his involvement in the SI series
“Words can’t express the shock
and heartbreak we felt as we
read the recent Sports Illustrated
article wherein with a brief
swipe of the keyboard, George
Dohrmann and Thayer Evans
darkened the rightfully pristine
and shining legacy of our wife,
mother and grandmother. All
allegations that Kay Norris ever
violated NCAA rules by paying
Oklahoma State football players
are utterly untrue.”
— A statement from the family
of Kay Norris, an OSU athletic
department employee who died in
2006 that was implicated in Part 1
of the SI series.
“The statute of limitations
isn’t over for me. My statute of
limitations is based on the fact
that we went in there and we
improved. We improved the
place, we improved the people,
we improved the service, and
we worked hard at developing
people. So for me, it’s important
that I categorize our time there
for my family, my experience,
as service rendered. And so I’m
not into statute of limitations.
I’m looking back on a time in
my life where I really enjoyed
being there. I was given a great
opportunity to be a head coach
the first time by Terry Don
Phillips and fell in love with
a wonderful community and
state and we participated fully.
It’s important to me. That’s a
wonderful time in my memory
and I know just how to categorize
it.”
— Former OSU coach and current
LSU coach Les Miles on SiriusXM’s
College Sports Nation on
Wednesday
“I’ve read the first story that
came out and literally I laughed
throughout the entire thing. It’s
comical for a lot of reasons and
I won’t go through the whole
deal, but obviously it’s dealing
more with before I got there.
First of all, clean slate, I didn’t
take any money or do anything
like that. That wasn’t the issue.”
— Former OSU and Cleveland
Browns quarterback Brandon
Weeden
“The biggest thing about the
interview was I didn’t know it
was an interview. I just thought
we were just having a conversation.
He didn’t state it was
an interview. He just said ‘hey,
I’m with Sports Illustrated,’ so I
kind of figured that. But as we
went into the conversation, he
just kept saying things about
OSU. I’m sitting there and I’m
in shock. I’m just kind of sitting
there in shock, like ‘whoa, that
was going on?’”
— Former OSU quarterback Aso
Pogi about his interview with
Sports Illustrated’s Thayer Evans
