The perfect pie crust

11/30/2011 7:30 AM

My Mamaw Walters made THE perfect pie crusts.

I know I'm probably romanticizing it just a smidge, as good childhood memories are often gilt-framed. But she was baking ...

I had two babies after Thanksgiving

11/29/2011 4:05 PM

I was actually given permission (i.e., I translated whatever I was told to mean what I wanted to hear) to spice-up my blog post titles with a smidgen of sensationalism. ...

Lagniappe: To infinity and behind!

11/18/2011 11:39 AM

I love Jeanne Moos.

She's the correspondent who does all those fabulously odd stories for CNN, her most recent -- and, perhaps, my new favorite -- being 'You Stuck ...

'Your mama's so fat, she sells shade.'

11/18/2011 7:00 AM

I'm not sure when it started, but Lord V and I have been saying 'yo mama' to one another for years.

This probably isn't the proper thing a fully sane person would ...

A sinful little thing to do with candied orange peel

11/17/2011 7:00 AM

Christmas of 1986 started out so jolly to have ended so violently.

As we did every year, Dad's side of the family gathered at Mamaw Wright's for our annual Christmas ...

Yo, fellas, let's have a beer and bake some cupcakes! Yar!!!

11/16/2011 7:00 AM

I'm not sure why I think this, but pirate talk -- i.e., 'yar,' 'ahoy, matey' and 'watch me peg leg or I'll make ye walk the plank' -- has always seemed like something ...

You know that filter people have that gives them pause before they say something inappropriate or flat-out stupid? Yeah, I don't have that.

Guilt-free green bean casserole: fact or fiction?

11/8/2011 8:00 AM

I've never needed an excuse to eat.

Happy? Sounds like ice cream time. Depressed? Skip the Kleenex, pass the chips and salsa.

End of the world? Well, there's ...

Apparently, the cha-cha-cha is a reindeer game

11/7/2011 3:44 PM

I'm amazed I don't have an ugly and/or tacky Christmas sweater haunting my wardrobe.

To my knowledge, I never had one, even as a kid whose mommy picked out his clothes ...

Living Wright

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
