Chris Cooper and Benedict Cumberbatch during filming for August: Osage County Sept. 28, 2012. MIKE SIMONS/Tulsa World
The fog hung heavy in the air as I drove to Pawhuska to shoot the filming of August: Osage County. The dread in my car was about as thick as the fog. I have been around many "Hollywood" types and events. Usually these are a nightmare. Usually the people are hard to work with. They don't want media around. When you hear about some of the tactics of working paparazzi, it is hard to blame them for not wanting photographers around. We take the distinction pretty seriously. We have not been following the stars around. We have had tips on where they are staying, and have made a choice as a newspaper that we are not going to chase them around. On Friday, while they filmed in Pawhuska, we felt it was important to document the occasion of the filming. It was in plain sight for anyone to see. It is a historic event for Pawhuska, and we needed to be there for that reason.
When I arrived to the set and stood with several fans, I kept waiting for problems. They never came. The people involved with the movie couldn't have been nicer. There were times I was asked to move, I tried to be agreeable.
As I was getting ready to leave, I spoke briefly with a crew member. He told me that when I arrived with my big lenses a call went out on the radio that the paparazzi were here. When I told him I worked for the Tulsa World, he laughed and said, "You're not paparazzi." I'm glad he felt that way.
