My time as an intern with the Tulsa World is drawing to a close.
This was my fourth internship, but I can still think of a handful of experiences and lessons that I have taken away from my short time here.
It is hard for people to understand just how much work goes into telling stories - building relationships and establishing contacts for stories are skills that take years to master. It has been an incredible experience working with some of my personal heroes of storytelling here at the Tulsa World.
12 weeks seems like a long time initially, but by the time you get used to the new city and get used to the workflow of the newspaper, the internship is already over.
I was lucky to end up spending so much time with John Butler and his family at his farm.
If nothing else, the time I spent with Butler Farms was a great escape from fast-paced daily grind of a newspaper.
When I started my story at Butler Farms, I was lucky to hear four-year-old Rhett say three words the entire time I was there. During my last visit, he was talking to me like someone he had known his whole life.
Time is by far one of the most important factors in telling a good story, and that was the biggest thing I took away from this story. The more time you spend, the more people start to open up and the more your pictures start to reflect the relationships you have built.
