Katie Gallion (left) fights with Tandy Hollingsworth (right) as their Hunger Games role playing event begins at Ray Harral Nature Park in Broken Arrow on Saturday, June 30, 2012. Katie didn't mind that she was "killed" by Tandy, she had to leave the game to get to a family reunion.
Kate Walker and her friend Lauren Young sat curled up in a concrete drainage pipe taking stock of their supplies. Beef jerky sticks, water, a granola bar and a toy dagger wrapped in duct tape. They're hiding place seemed like a good idea at the time, but an alliance of older kids found them just a few minutes later. I ask them if they had a strategy for surviving this non-lethal version of the popular book and movie The Hunger Games. "Not really," they laughed. "Hide and not get killed."
The large alliance of high school students and recent graduates let them live this time. It was too early in the game. The event, which was held at Ray Harral Nature Park in Broken Arrow, was scheduled to last for 12 hours.
David Moreland, who helped organize the event and acted as a Gamemaker, setting traps and devising schemes for the players to keep the game interesting, says he wants to start an event that will become a tradition that they can pass to younger friends and siblings. "We want it to get bigger and better every year until it gets to the point where it's kind of legendary."
At the end of the day, Garrison Bare became the first winner of the Broken Arrow Hunger Games. Here are a few images and a quick video from the event.
