Quit your whining about the heat

By MIKE SIMONS Staff Photographer on Aug 4, 2012, at 1:40 PM  Updated on 8/04 at 1:48 PM

As I photographed the campers at Hope's Crossing, I began to really feel sorry for myself. It was about 112 degrees and I was photographing them as they swam. I couldn't get into the pool because I had long pants on and no swimsuit or underwater cameras with me.

It was about then that I noticed Truman Hedrick scooting up to the the diving board using his hands. He has only one leg. He would take a couple "steps" and then stop to blow on his hands because they were so hot on the pavement. A couple more, then blow on his hands again. Then he would climb the ladder to the diving board in the same way. I saw him do this many times. He never complained or asked for help from me or any of the counselors.

I don't know about you, but that makes me feel like a wimp for the complaining I have done this year.
