Rescue dogs drill for disaster

Animals can do some pretty amazing things.

Rescue dogs, for example, can sniff out a person buried under tons of rubble. It's incredible to watch.

A handful of rescue dogs and their handlers took part in a training exercise Saturday that tested each dog's abilities. I was there as they rescued trapped "victims" from beneath huge piles of wood and concrete.

The dogs would weave through the obstacles, sniffing their way to the unlucky volunteers who were buried. It didn't take long at all, and they moved with a sure-footedness that was very impressive.

My dog, on the other hand, digs up the backyard and eats anything that's not locked away. Search and rescue probably isn't in the cards for her.
