Sometimes when people find out I used to live and work in Cincinnati they ask if I miss covering pro sports. I do not miss that at all. What I do find myself missing is covering national politics. I was in Ohio, a swing state, for the 2000 and 2004 elections and it seemed I was covering candidates several times a month.
Yesterday, I got to cover Rick Santorum as he made an appearance at ORU. I enjoyed the assignment. I love trying to get something different from all the other photographers and news outlets at these events. Usually that just means spending time and waiting.
After the event was over and Santorum was working the crowd and shaking hands I saw Reagan Neubauer,9, waiting patiently for her chance to meet the candidate. As it appeared her chance was slipping away, she shouted for Santorum and asked if she could have an autograph. Not far from Neubauer was 5 month old Kaylee Rivers/Elliott. I followed Rivers/Elliott and stuck close to her, knowing that politicians will always honor a request for a photo with a baby. Rivers/Elliott's grandmother asked Santorum and of course he held the baby as the photo was taken.
