Wednesday morning was about as far from routine as my days get, but I never felt more prepared for an assignment.
I layered up with pajamas, pants, socks and my new waterproof snowboarding pants. Added shirts, gloves, a couple of hats and a raincoat and left the house for Bassmaster Classic Practice Day at 3:30 AM.
I arrived at 5:30 AM to start taking pictures. The first thing Bassmaster Elite Series Pro Angler Edwin Evers said to me was "I'm worried you're going to get cold." Apparently my weak assemblage of layers shouted 'I've never ridden in a bass boat at 70 mph on a cold day.' He offered to get another coat out of the truck, but I convinced him I'd be fine.
Evers had serious fishing to do, practicing for the tournament. I photographed him and made a video about his practice time. I had plenty of time to take pictures while he fished. We were on the water for a little over 7 hours. When the really heavy snow started falling in the early afternoon, we were in a secluded, hilly part of Grand Lake, surrounded by beautiful, gray scenery.
The tournament starts tomorrow. Look for more pictures and blog posts by Mike Simons from the first day.
